It is now one of the ‘coolest places to live in the UK’ thanks to new developments, but many locals claim prices have ‘shot up’
To the south of Manchester lies a bustling town that has been in the spotlight over the last few years. What was once an ‘underinvested’ Greater Manchester area has now been named one of the ‘coolest places to live in the UK’ thanks to a major £1bn regeneration project that is now underway.
The market town of Stockport has been named as one of The Sunday Times’ ‘Best Places to Live’ for the last two years running, with judges stating that “the standard former mill town has reinvented itself as a funky, family-friendly alternative to Manchester’s Northern Quarter.”
Its new, trendy bohemian vibe has even seen it dubbed ‘the New Berlin’ by a Manchester DJ. But despite all the buzz around the area, some locals have expressed fears of ‘gentrification’, telling the M.E.N that living in the town centre is now unaffordable as ‘prices have just shot up’.
